A visit of delegation from the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs to CARICC

On the 11th of September, 2014,  Mr. Jun  NANAZAVA, Director of Central Asia and the Caucasus Division  of European Affairs Bureau of  the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan,  accompanied by Mr. Yasumasa IIJIMA, Counselor of the Embassy of Japan in the Republic of Kazakhstan,  paid a visit to CARICC. 

The purpose of the visit was to familiarize with the current situation on drug trafficking in Central Asia and the opportunities for cooperation in the fight against illicit drugs.
Mr. B. Sarsekov, CARICC Director, briefed the guests on the primary activities of the Centre, the results achieved and challenges faced.
At the meeting, it was emphasized the role of strategic partners and international organizations to support initiatives to combat the spread of drugs along the “Northern Route”.  CARICC leadership stressed  the financial assistance from Japan, which is one of the donors of the Project to establish the Centre. J Japanese diplomats have expressed the wish to convey to their people information for what purposes the Japanese Government spends money.  In this regard, they familiarized with the work of CARICC with great interest
In particular, the guests met directly with the staff of 2 units  in CARICC and liaison officers of the competent authorities of CARICC member-states.  Visitors studied in detail the activities  of the unit to assist and coordinate  international operations, including controlled deliveries, and information and analytical unit of the Center.
Mr. F. Saprykin, Head of  the UNODC Programme Office in Almaty, provided Japanese diplomats a chance to get acquainted with the analytical researches  in the fight against drug trafficking implemented by the joint working group of UNODC and CARICC.
In conclusion, the guests noted the well-established network of cooperation and interaction  between the competent authorities of CARICC member-states  and thanked for the informative and useful meeting.

CARICC - Central Asian Regional Information and Coordination Centre for combating the illicit trafficking of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and their precursors, established within the Memorandum of Understanding on sub-regional drug control cooperation dated May 4 1996 (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) between the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Russian Federation, the Republic of Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, the Republic of Uzbekistan and UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
