CARICC – IS A STANDING INTERGOVERNMENTAL BODY TO COORDINATE EFFORTS IN THE FIGHT AGAINST TRANSNATIONAL DRUG-RELATED CRIME

The U.S. Delegation Visit to CARICC

On the 25th of October 2016, a meeting was held in CARICC between Major-General B. Zhunusov, Director of CARICC, Chairperson of the National Coordinators Council of CARICC member-states, Police Major- General, A. Vyborov, and Mr. William R. Braunfild, Ambassador, Assistant to the Secretary of State, International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Bureau (INL).

Also, as part of the U.S. delegation, Mr. Mark Moody, the U.S. Consul General in the Republic of Kazakhstan, Ms. Judith Kempbell Head of the Regional Unit for Europe, Eurasia and Central Asia, Mr. James Callaghan, Senior Advisor to INL Programmes, and others. The parties expressed mutual interest in strengthening mutually beneficial links to address a wide range of issues related to counteraction of illicit drug trafficking. CARICC leadership made acknowledgements to the U.S.A. for its consistent financial support of CARICC activities.
CARICC leadership and W. Braunfild discussed the prospects of further development of CARICC, strengthening its importance in the fight against drugs in Central Asian region and noted the existence of intellectual potential of this international organization for this. In order to improve the effectiveness of information and analytical activities of CARICC, the American side proposed to consider the possibility of enhancing cooperation with the competent authorities of Afghanistan. B. Zhunusov, CARICC Director, briefed the guests on the interim results of CARICC activities in 2016.
It was stressed that in addition to the U.S., the Republic of Kazakhstan makes a significant, including the financial contribution, support to CARICC since its inception. The meeting was held in a constructive spirit, with proposals of a series of initiatives from both parties.

CARICC - Central Asian Regional Information and Coordination Centre for combating the illicit trafficking of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and their precursors, established within the Memorandum of Understanding on sub-regional drug control cooperation dated May 4 1996 (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) between the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Russian Federation, the Republic of Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, the Republic of Uzbekistan and UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
